"Supporting the Light"
2007 Mozambique Trip

A river crossing point between Malawi and Mozambique. Approx. 200 metres wide and as it is the dry season, not very deep. With boots off, we are able to wade across.

A sister meets us at the Malawian side and insists on carrying our bag and boots. Charlie and Jim stride out in front, while George holds back to take some photos.

Standing on a sandbank in the middle of the Ruo River, George realises the significance for this occasion and asks for a photo to be taken of him and Pr. Jim.

The sister with us had announced our arrival with her African call and the church members were soon gathered on the other side, singing songs of welcome.

The children sang and clapped as they led us along a path from the river to the village where they stopped under a tree still singing - it was a wonderful experience.

The welcome to the village having been completed, we continued on to the little village church - the children still singing all the way! What a memorable occasion.

The welcome continued in the church where we were introduced to the village elder and given the place of honour at the front. George, having the camera, manages to stay out of most of the photos :¬)

Two youths supplied the rhythm for the singing - and did a great job. Their drums, together with some tin cans filled with pebbles, accompanied the lively and enthusiastic praise. Click HERE for video.

The little church soon filled and a number of pastors from other villages arrived. They had attended the Malawi Bible Week in Muona and came to give their support.

Charlie preached a gospel message and also sought to encourage the folks to grow in grace and stay true to the Lord. He and Pastor Jim then prayed for the sick.

While praying for a sick child, it was discovered that the mother also had an African charm around the child’s waist, so Charlie challenges the folks to faith in GOD!

The service being ended, we were invited to the pastor's house and as we had indicated that we could not stay for lunch, were treated to a soft drink and biscuits! ;¬)

As we rose to say our farewells, the choir excitedly sang out once more and led us through the village back to the Ruo River. We had only been in Mozambique a few hours but what a wonderful experience!

Border crossing formalities were minimal on arrival but on leaving Mozambique, we did check in with the official and for George this was another photo occasion. Alas, he was unable to stamp our passports :¬(
